Landowners need:
- trees (5 acres will do)
- a culvert or stream crossingthat is a barrier to at least some age classes of fish.
The program is for small forest landowners only (those who harvested from their own lands less than 6 million board feet over the last 3 years and less than 20 million board feet in the next ten years). Lands where Department of Natural Resources has no jurisdiction do not qualify, for example Tribal lands and most Tribal Trust Lands, US Park or Forest Service Lands.
The program has funded 125 projects since 2003. The average cost per project has been $42,169 but some have exceeded $100,000. The legislative direction is to fix the worst barriers first. The signups are ranked based upon benefits to fish (stream miles opened, fish species benefited and costs).
