Frequently Asked Questions:
How to obtain a copy of a death certificate?
The funeral home or mortuary will assist you in obtaining certified death certificates you may need for legal purposes. If you need to obtain a copy at a later date, click the following site to go to the proper office. www.healthygh.org/page.aspx?id=99018
How do I claim the personal effects of my loved one?
Generally any personal effects that were with the decedent when the funeral home
or mortuary transported the body of your loved one will be available for release
at that funeral home or mortuary.
At times law enforcement will take personal effects for safekeeping and these items
will be released through their agency. If the death is associated with a crime,
these items may be held for a period of time or may only be released with the
approval of the Prosecutor’s Office.
The Coroner’s Office may also take personal effects for safekeeping and the
release of these items should be arranged through our office.
What about left-over prescriptions?
Other jurisdictions differ widely on what to do with left-over prescriptions.
Our Grays Harbor County policy is that our staff will secure medications only if
it was necessary for the Coroner or Deputy Coroner to respond to the scene.
If there is a potential criminal investigation surrounding this death, the
medications may become evidentiary and the law enforcement personnel will secure
and remove the medications.
If a family wishes assistance in proper disposal of prescription medications,
they can make arrangements with the Coroner to bring the prescriptions in to
the Coroner’s Office.
