This is the official web site of the Grays Harbor County Department of Public Defense, the agency charged with providing publicly funded defense services to indigent persons when required by law or the Constitution. We strive to be innovative and to ensure community conscious public defense service delivery. The primary objective is to serve those protected by public defense counsel with quality trained, hard-working, compassionate and justice-minded attorneys. The attorneys selected for contracts and appointed by the courts are qualified and meet the standards set forth for appointment by Washington State.
Attorneys who provide indigent defense services are attorneys in private practice who are contracted with the county. These attorneys can only represent individuals if a judge appoints the attorney. If you have questions about public defense services supported by this office, either as a concerned community member, client, family member of a client or criminal justice professional, please do not hesitate to contact
F. McNamara Jardine
Grays Harbor County, Coordinator
Department of Public Defense
Grays Harbor County Public Defense Department is responsible for promoting the professional independence and integrity of the public defense system, and for fulfilling the county’s obligation to provide quality, independent counsel to those who qualify for appointment of counsel at county expense. We hold ourselves to the highest professional and ethical standards.
When the court determines that a person cannot afford an attorney, the County Department of Public Defense is assigned to represent that person’s interests and rights in his or her criminal case.
The County Public Defense also represents juveniles in At-Risk-Youth (ARY) cases, Child in Need of Services petitions (CHINS) and truancies. This Department does not handle parent representation in dependencies, which is instead handled by the Washington State Office of Public Defense.
Grays Harbor the County’s Department of Public Defense is committed to providing all mandated legal services to protect and defend the rights of clients in a manner that assures eligible people receive professional and effective representation while efficiently expending public resources and holding ourselves to the highest professional and ethical standards.
The Department of Public Defense is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion through race, color, gender, age, religion, marital status, identity, and experience. We are dedicated to create an environment of mutual respect, equity and acceptance of persons we serve and with whom we serve.
We will accomplish our mission through support, collaboration, transparency and accessibility to all partners in the criminal justice community.
